The World of the Ascension

The Ascension takes place on a vast and varied world with many different people and customs.  In general the world is a standard fantasy realm mixed with a touch of science and technology.  The most notable are the introduction of firearms and flying vessels.  With the proliferation of firearms, the art of swordmanship and the number of swordmen has greatly reclined in many areas of the world.  Cities have flourished as trade and transportation have greatly improved.  Dispite the changes in the larger cities, the countryside has remained mostly unchanged.

There are four dominant countries in the world of the Ascension.  The Northern Kingdom of Arenia, the Oriental Empire of Ty-Solren, the Republic of Penath, and the Southern country of Natrisun.  A number of small countries exist besides onces mentioned above.

The capital of Arenia is Aurail, a bustling city which retains much of its medevial heritage while still providing all the more "modern" facilities.  The current ruler of this magnificent kingdom is King Matthew the Second.  King Matthew is a kind and fair ruler, and although he rules over the land, much of the decision making is done by the council, a select number of representatives who advise him.  There are two major influences in this council, the Cardinal Geraldis, and the Count of Darkearthen.

The great Oriental Empire is lead by the Emperor Tran Sung Lee.  The Emperor is a great leader, compassionate yet strict.  Unlike most rulers, he lives to serve and protect his people; his generousity is well known around the world.  Dispite the introduction of science and technology, the Empire has retained much of its traditions and customs.  Although the Great Highway brings much wealth, several natural disasters and the recent war against Arenia has left its toll on the people.

The Republic of Penath is a prime example of progress.  Penath is the first to discard rule from a single individual or family.  The many distinctive regions of Penath send representatives to the capital of Markander to debate and enact policies.  The Republic strives to maintain a neutral position to all the exterior conflicts.  Although the idea of a Republic sounds ideal, the country experiences many hardships and what can be called "growing pains".

Natrisun is an exotic and mysterious place, mostly because its borders are closed to most people.  The country is ruled by an autocracy, who is said to rule with an iron fist.  Not much is known about this wonderous and intriguing land except that most people that enter do not return. . . .
